Students, families, staff, and community partners gathered in the quad for an evening that included a middle school esports tournament, ribbon-cutting ceremonies, and tours of the school’s Esports Lab and Sports Medicine Learning Center.
Principal Deborah Madrigal welcomed guests to the celebration, followed by remarks from Baldwin Park Unified Superintendent Dr. Froilan N. Mendoza, who highlighted the District’s commitment to providing students with engaging, hands-on learning experiences that connect their interests to future college and career opportunities.
The celebration began with middle school students getting an early look at competitive esports through a special tournament. Guests then joined school and District leaders for ribbon cuttings and tours of both upgraded classrooms.
The Brave Esports Lab, led by Coach Peter Smith, is part of the school’s Digital Technology Center. The esports spaces are designed to accommodate more than 50 gaming stations, along with kiosks, coaching and teacher stations, and shoutcasting areas. Each gaming station includes a high-performance computer, specialized keyboard, headset, and ergonomic gaming chair.
BPHS launched its first competitive esports teams during the 2025-26 school year. Its varsity Rocket League team finished its debut season with a 7-2 record and ranked 17th among 84 teams statewide, while the varsity Marvel Rivals team finished 5-4 and ranked 44th among 135 teams. Beyond competition, students strengthen communication, collaboration, problem-solving and gameplay strategy while exploring pathways in technology, software development, entertainment and digital content creation.
The newly upgraded Sports Medicine Learning Center provides another hands-on environment for students, with a classroom designed to reflect real-world athletic training and recovery spaces. Led by teacher Melanie Frias Walters, the center includes patient treatment and taping tables, cold plunge stations, a recovery and stretching area, free weights and other equipment used for sports medicine instruction.
Students learn about anatomy, injury prevention, athletic recovery and basic patient care while practicing skills such as ankle and wrist wrapping, proper icing techniques, stretching, recovery exercises, basic wound care and first aid. Located in the former field house near the athletic field, the renovated space also gives students opportunities to connect classroom instruction with real-world athletic environments.
The program introduces students to pathways in medicine, physical therapy, rehabilitation, sports performance and wellness while complementing BPHS Career Technical Education coursework and other instructional resources, including the school’s Anatomage virtual anatomy table.
Representatives from the offices of state Senator Susan Rubio and Assemblywoman Blanca Rubio also attended the celebration, recognizing Baldwin Park High School for the accomplishment and its continued efforts to expand innovative learning opportunities for students.
The two upgraded spaces reflect Baldwin Park Unified’s continued focus on creating relevant learning experiences that allow students to explore their interests, develop practical skills and discover pathways to college, career and future success.
