The Gates Scholarship is a highly selective, last-dollar scholarship awarded to outstanding seniors from low-income households. Each year, the program recognizes exceptional student leaders and provides funding to cover the full cost of attendance not already met by other financial aid, including tuition, fees, books, housing and meals, and other personal expenses.
Depaz, who currently holds a 4.5 grade point average, is also actively involved on campus as a leader in Link Crew, where he serves as a mentor to incoming freshmen, helping them transition and succeed in their first year of high school.
Depaz learned he had been selected when he received an email notification on his phone.
“I was shocked,” Depaz said. “It means a lot to my family to have this opportunity.” He immediately shared the news with his mother, and the moment quickly turned into a celebration of tears, pride, and excitement at home.
Depaz plans to attend University of California, Los Angeles, where he intends to pursue a career in the medical field. He said his desire to help others began in childhood, inspired in part by comic book heroes.
“Being in the medical field will allow me to do just that,” he said. “It’s been my dream.”
He credits Baldwin Park High School teacher Mr. Maldonado who teaches both AP Government/ Economics, and AP Psychology, for helping him refine his goals and push himself academically during his senior year. With encouragement from both his teacher and peers, Depaz strengthened his academic performance and applied to UCLA and the Gates Scholarship — ultimately earning acceptance to both.
Depaz said his family has been an important source of support throughout the process. He recalled touring UCLA with his father, describing it as a meaningful first experience for their family as they prepare for this next chapter.
He also emphasized the importance of a strong support system at school.
“Being around the right people really helped put me in a position to succeed,” Depaz said.
For incoming students, Depaz offers simple advice: stay focused, surround yourself with positive influences, and trust the process.
As he prepares to graduate with the Class of 2026, Depaz said he is looking forward to cherishing his final moments with friends and classmates.
Depaz’s recognition marks the third consecutive year that a Baldwin Park High School student has been named a Gates Scholar, highlighting the continued academic excellence and achievement within the school community.
