Baldwin Park High Students to Perform in Rose Parade

Ulises Vargas, a senior saxophonist, and Leo Espinoza, a junior trombonist, will perform alongside musicians from Pasadena City College during the iconic New Year’s Day parade, which is viewed by millions of spectators worldwide. Selection for the Honor Band is based on musical excellence, leadership and performance readiness.

Espinoza returns to the Rose Parade after being selected as a sophomore — a rare achievement that highlights his consistency, discipline and growth as a young musician.

Vargas, a senior drum major and choir member, is recognized as a rising star who dedicates much of his free time to pursuing his passion for the performing arts. His leadership and commitment to music have made him a standout member of the Baldwin Park High School band program.

The students will perform under the direction of Pasadena City College Band Director Peter Huerta, who previously served as their instructor and as the former Baldwin Park High School band director. The Baldwin Park High School band program is now led by Band Director Juan Jasso.

“I’m really excited. I didn’t think I would be accepted for a second year,” Espinoza said.

The Tournament of Roses Parade will air live on Wednesday, Jan. 1, beginning at 8 a.m. PST, on major networks including ABC, NBC, ESPN and KTLA, featuring elaborate floral floats, marching bands and equestrian units from Pasadena, California. Participation in the parade reflects the strength of Baldwin Park High School’s visual and performing arts program and the dedication of its student musicians.
