North Park Continuation High Launches Inaugural Sports League

The league was introduced as part of the school’s broader effort to build consistent routines, strengthen school culture and support student success beyond the classroom. Early results have been encouraging, with staff reporting improved attendance, healthier habits and increased student participation.

Students competed in flag football and softball during the league’s first year, laying the foundation for an expanding athletics program. The fall season recently concluded with North Park’s final softball game, which brought together students, staff and community members to celebrate the program’s impact.

Adding to the excitement, students from neighboring Geddes Elementary School formed a surprise fan section, cheering on the Vikings from the sidelines and creating a lively, supportive atmosphere.

The sports league is led by teacher-coaches Rigo Torres and Kristine Dougherty, who emphasized teamwork, accountability and leadership throughout the season.

“We are incredibly proud of our students and how they showed up for themselves and each other,” Torres said. “We’re excited to keep this momentum going and continue building opportunities that support their growth. This program wouldn’t be possible without the support of our school staff and community.”

With its inaugural year complete, North Park Continuation High is preparing to expand the league to include soccer, basketball and volleyball, continuing its commitment to student engagement and whole-child development.
