Mr. Ibis Aguilar, who has served almost 20 years as a teacher and over 20 years as a coach, was honored on Friday, Sept. 12. The University of California Los Angeles recognition came ahead of the “Big Day for Teachers” on Sept. 16, the highlight of Extra Yard for Teachers Week, which runs Sept. 13–20.
Currently an Outreach Teacher in Baldwin Park Unified’s Independent Studies/Digital Learning and Beyond (DLAB) program, Aguilar works closely with at-risk students to ensure they remain on track for graduation. Now in his eighth year at Baldwin Park High, he has focused his efforts in the classroom, after previously coaching football, wrestling, soccer, baseball, and track and field. Aguilar said his philosophy has remained the same: “Teach our youth the characteristics and process of being successful, so that they can succeed in anything.”
A graduate of the University of La Verne, Aguilar said he was inspired to enter education by the teachers and coaches who motivated him growing up in El Monte. “I’m honored to receive this recognition, but more than anything I’m grateful to be able to give back,” Aguilar said. “The extra things we’ve done in the community such as packages for the homeless, Relay for Life, ALS walks, and fundraisers, those are just as important in teaching students about personal growth and character.”
Aguilar has also taken the lead in dispelling misconceptions about the DLAB program. While some view digital learning as primarily for students falling behind, Aguilar stresses that it serves students from all backgrounds, including those with medical needs, professional sports or work commitments, or family circumstances that make a traditional school schedule difficult. DLAB students, he noted, still have full access to ASB events, clubs, athletics, and other school activities while benefiting from the flexibility and quiet work environment the program offers.
“Teaching for me means teaching the whole student—not just academics, but growth in all areas so they can be successful in whatever path they choose,” Aguilar said. “The first step towards success is showing up; in the ways you can, because every step brings you closer to your goals, including graduation.”
