BPUSD’s DLAB Program Empowers Students to Thrive

As members of the Class of 2025 turned their tassels, three graduating seniors: Sierra Taylor Villagran, Jacqueline Loera, and Ethan Gutierrez, shared how the District’s alternative, independent study program gave them the flexibility, support, and structure they needed to grow both academically and personally.

DLAB, Baldwin Park Unified’s free public independent study program, serves students in grades TK-12 across Los Angeles County and surrounding areas. Through a virtual platform accessible 24/7, students complete a full course load aligned to state standards and UC/CSU A–G requirements. The program is ideal for students seeking flexible scheduling due to health concerns, social-emotional needs, academic challenges, or a desire to accelerate their learning.

Villagran, who joined the program three years ago due to social anxiety, credits DLAB for helping her rediscover her potential and confidence. She said the encouragement of her teacher, Mrs. Rios, and counselor, Christopher Sandoval, helped her grow in ways she never imagined, even winning a District-wide oratory contest and graduating early.

“Without DLAB, I would have never been able to learn what I was truly capable of, and for that, I am eternally grateful,” Villagran said. She is currently enrolled at Mt. San Antonio College.

DLAB also continues to evolve to meet student needs, offering more than 40 A–G approved courses, curriculum aligned with Common Core standards, and regular monitoring to ensure student progress. Whether a student is recovering credits, pursuing personal interests, or simply prefers independent learning, DLAB provides a tailored experience with the academic rigor and support of Baldwin Park Unified.

“DLAB helped me learn at my own pace, which meant I could fully understand each subject before moving on,” said Loera, who chose to stay for a full senior year to explore additional classes. “The individualized support from teachers made my high school experience amazing.”

Gutierrez, who followed in the footsteps of his older sister and graduated a year early, said the program taught him invaluable life skills,  including time management, self-motivation, and organization. Thanks to the support of DLAB staff and his counselor, he completed college courses while still in high school and will attend Cal State Long Beach in the fall to study medicine.

“The care and support from teachers, staff, and classmates gave me the motivation to keep pushing regardless of the obstacles I faced,” Gutierrez said. “I’m proud to say I was a part of the DLAB program.”

DLAB counselor Christopher Sandoval plays an integral role in supporting students’ personalized educational journeys. Students receive one-on-one support, regular check-ins, and guidance as they work through coursework from home using district-issued devices and online curriculum platforms.

“If I could give my students any extra advice, it would be to not let challenges discourage you or take you off course. The most powerful stories often come from those who have faced adversity and pushed through to reach their goals,” said DLAB counselor Christopher Sandoval.

DLAB stands as an example of how Baldwin Park Unified continues to adapt, innovate, and support all learners.
