Mary Grace Calma is one of a select number of high-achieving students nationwide who were awarded the highly competitive scholarship, valued at more than $325,000. It covers the full cost of attendance including tuition, housing, meals, travel, and supplies with no loans or parental contribution.
“I waited five hours to open the email because I was so nervous,” Calma recalled. “When I finally did, I screamed, ‘Mom, I got in!’ She started calling all my relatives, and I was on the phone for two hours talking to everyone about it.”
The moment was made even more meaningful as Mary Grace shared the news on the phone with Bryann, last year’s BPHS QuestBridge recipient. Bryann Revilla has served as a mentor and guide for her throughout the process.
“I’m so thankful for her support,” Calma said. “Having someone walk me through it gave me the courage to believe in myself.”
Mary Grace was matched to the University of Chicago, her second-choice school, and one she first learned about during a college admissions webinar. She plans to pursue law or business, looking forward to strong academic programs and internship opportunities.
While Mary Grace now thrives in academics and leadership, her high school journey started quietly.
“As a freshman, I was really reserved. I would go to class, go home, and repeat,” she said. “Then my friends encouraged me to join tennis, and it really helped me transition and find a place on campus.”
Since then, Calma has become deeply involved in her school community. She was a member of the LEO Club, Key Club, National Honor Society, and a founding officer of the Model United Nations Club. She credits Ms. Arpita Shah, her teacher and club advisor, for inspiring her and encouraging her to pursue the QuestBridge opportunity.
Mary Grace is looking forward to enjoying the rest of her senior year and staying connected with the Baldwin Park High School community.
“I’ve learned how much I enjoy leaving an impact and being part of something bigger,” she said. “I’d encourage all underclassmen to go for it, and try new opportunities on campus.”
