Middle School Students Excel at GATE Academic Decathlon

The team-based competition, held inside the Baldwin Park High School gym, challenged students in grades six through eight to showcase their intellect, creativity, and knowledge. Teams from BP STEM Academy, Jones Middle School, Olive Middle School, and Sierra Vista Middle School competed in six rounds covering ten categories: Logic, English Language Arts (Literature, Poetry, Vocabulary), Math, History, Art, Oral Presentation, Science, Health, Game Creation, and Music.

Olive Middle School earned first place with a total of 19,000 points, followed closely by Sierra Vista Middle School with 18,000 points. Jones Middle finished with 15,000 points, and BP STEM scored 12,000.

The event was judged by guest evaluators, including Superintendent Dr. Froilan N. Mendoza, several District leaders, teachers, and other staff. The decathlon was emceed by BP STEM Academy counselor Mr. Lonnie Moreno, who is known for engaging the school community with his energetic presence.

Students showcased collaboration, strategic thinking, and school spirit throughout each round. Sierra Vista Middle School scored highest in Logic and History-related categories, while Olive Middle School dominated in Math and English Language Arts. Jones Middle stood out in the Science, Health, and Game Creation round, and BP STEM Academy led in Music.

“This event highlights the brilliance of our students. We are incredibly proud of every participant and the educators who support them,” said BPUSD Superintendent Dr. Mendoza.

The GATE Academic Decathlon continues to be a highlight for the District’s gifted students, offering a dynamic way to celebrate their academic growth and teamwork.
