A Commitment to Success - Superintendent Mark M. Skvarna

A Commitment to Success

It is my pleasure to share with you the great programs and activities that have been implemented in the Baldwin Park Unified School District. The Board is united in their efforts to prepare all students for success and has high expectations for our students, staff and community. This year we are proud to announce that Pre-K programs are being offered at all elementary sites. The focus in our Pre-K programs is reading literacy targeting students beginning at three years of age. In addition, all of our elementary sites have a three hour after school program that focuses on literacy, physical activity and homework help. We have also moved towards district-wide technology, adding new software for data analysis, standards-based test preparation, and teacher resources. We are continuing our language acquisition focus with the addition of three new instructional coaches trained in Project GLAD. We are working towards getting 100% of our elementary sites trained in GLAD with the goal of empowering our teachers with highly effective strategies.

At the secondary level, we have continued our commitment in guaranteeing our students are prepared for post secondary opportunities. Through AB 1802 funding, we have increased our number of counselors, and students are involved in more one on one academic counseling meetings. In October we sponsored our second annual BPUSD College Fair. Eighth through twelfth grade students and parents were involved in a series of workshops, which prepared them for the college application process and college experience. Over thirty five colleges and universities also attended including Ivy League universities such as Yale and Harvard as well as UC, Cal State, military, private and technical colleges. Additionally, our secondary schools are involved with implementing school-wide Smaller Learning Communities, Internet based learning through our partnership with Cal State Fullerton and Cyber High and core area common assessments. Through the implementation of these strategies, we believe student achievement and academic success will continue to progress.

In addition to our academic focus, we are extremely proud of our facilities. Our students attend school in clean, well managed schools, which provide students with a positive learning environment. We continue to be proud of our new state of the art athletic stadiums at both high schools. The stadiums have provided an outstanding source of community pride and have been utilized by our sports teams, music programs and community events.

We engage in ongoing collaboration for the development of powerful plans to ensure academic improvement in the areas of language arts and mathematics. Through these efforts, professional development is vital and all staff will play a key role for this year and years to come. Baldwin Unified School District represents the finest examples of professionals who work together to create a successful environment for our students.
